WEST PARIS – A tractor-trailer collided with a Dodge Caravan shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of routes 219 and 26.
Frank Scinto, 43, of West Paris was driving a 1996 van down the hill on Route 219, which crosses Route 26 at Trap Corner, according to Paris Police Sgt. Michael Dailey.
Scinto was moving into Route 26 when his van collided with a truck heading west, Dailey added. The van was totaled.
Dailey said the truck driver, William Presby, 60, of Fayette, was unhurt, but Scinto had to be taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway for tests. Presby was driving for Midwest Price Co. out of West Paris, Dailey said.
Scinto said that his van had slid on gravel and could not stop at the stop sign, Dailey said. But Dailey added that he found no skid marks on the road.
Dailey said Presby saw the van and applied his brakes, and also steered to the left to avoid the van, but could not avert the collision.
No other drivers were involved in the accident, although a driver in the opposite direction said she saw Presby’s truck pull into her lane and managed to get out of the way in time.
Shortly after the accident, first responders were sweeping glass out of the road.
“The glass from the driver’s side of the vehicle just blew out from the impact,” Dailey said.
