The Xmas shopper is now on her daily tour of the stores and for the benefit of such women as are perplexed as to what to give a man, the following list may offer some suggestions: A year’s subscription to some coveted magazine causes a great deal of pleasure. A nice umbrella is a standard gift. A gold cigar cutter to hang on a watch chain. A watch fob with a gold buckle, perhaps a stone seal attached to it. A dressing gown or a smoking-jacket. These come in low values or may be of velvet, lined with padded satin and trimmed with silk cords. Roman blankets in all colors are not expensive and are always acceptable.

50 Years Ago, 1955

The frequency of coasting accidents and near accidents caused Lewiston police yesterday to issue a warning to youngsters and their parents. “It is now becoming quite obvious that these youngsters who want to use their sleds must find some place to use them other than the streets,” stated Capt. Ralph E. Fraser. “There are altogether too many autos on the road and sleds should not be in competition with them.” The police official said the parents should give their youngsters proper advise to keep them off the roads and to find good coasting areas on hills that do not lead into roads.

25 Years Ago, 1980

Former Beatle John Lennon was shot to death late in the day outside his luxury apartment building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, police said. Authorities said Lennon, 40, was rushed in a police car to Roosevelt Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting. An officer at the 20th Precinct said the shooting occurred outside the Dakota, the century-old luxury apartment house where Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, lived across the street from Central Park. Police said they had a suspect and described him as “a local screwball” with no apparent motive for shooting Lennon.
