POLAND – A teenage track-and-field athlete remained hospitalized in stable condition Thursday, three days after he collapsed while training with his teammates.

Duncan Bishop, a sophomore at Poland Regional High School, is being treated in the pediatric intensive care unit at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston. His collapse was related to a blood-vessel deficiency in his brain, Principal Bill Doughty said Wednesday.

Dean of Students Ray Lafreniere has stayed in contact with Bishop’s parents in Boston so he can keep Bishop’s classmates and teachers up to date.

“I can’t go anywhere without four or five kids asking how he’s doing,” Lafreniere said. He said the teenager’s condition had not changed Thursday.

The school has put up posters for students to write messages on and sign. The posters and several cards will be sent to Bishop next week.

Bishop’s father is also setting up an e-mail account so his son can receive messages from his classmates, Lafreniere said.
