The University of New England has donated a snowplow and truck to Good Shepherd Food Bank to replace the one stolen right before Thanksgiving.

The donation will save the charity thousands of dollars in snow removal costs this winter. On Wednesday, when the truck was picked up, it was filled with food, donated by UNE students.

We were outraged when the food bank’s plow was stolen just as winter began to grip the state. The charity does amazing work providing food for Mainers who need the help the most. When two powerful hurricanes hit the Gulf Coast, the food bank responded with thousands of pounds of supplies.

The University of New England, which had planned to auction the truck and plow, deserves credit for stepping up for a worthy cause and undoing the damage done by a thoughtless criminal.
