PORTLAND – Jalna F. Smith, 76, of Oxford, died on Friday, Dec. 9, at Maine Medical Center.

She was born in Norway on Aug. 25, 1929, the daughter of George and Marion Putnam Merrill.

She worked at B.E. Cole for many years and helped her husband, Al Smith, who passed away in 1999, manage Al’s Variety in Oxford. They also ran a hot dog stand and prepared lunches for local businesses.

The last years of her life have been enjoyed with Lindley Fortier, who brought love, smiles, sharing, traveling and togetherness to her life.

Jalna loved to jitterbug, enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing, going to Moosehead Lake, reading and puzzles, and had a love for flowers. Her daughters remember traveling with her, shopping, pool parties and just talking on the back deck.

Her daughters, her loving companion, her niece and friends shared the sacred space of her passing.

She is survived by her daughters, Paula Adams of Oxford, Carol Lessard of South Paris, and Patti Truman of Bethel; her stepchildren, Albert Smith of South Paris and Donald Smith of Oxford; her grandchildren, Darci Westleigh of Auburn, Ed Adams Jr. of Lisbon Falls, Scott Maddix of San Diego, Calif., and Michael Smith of South Paris; step-grandchildren, Natalie Smith of Poland, Nicole Blaquiere of Saco, and Cody Smith of Oxford; great-grandchildren, Roddy, Ryan and Reid Westleigh of Auburn, and Ed III and Bryce Adams of Poland; step-grandchildren, Albert Smith III “Little A.J.” of Poland and Mark and David Blaquiere of Saco; and a niece, Raven “Debby” Merrill of South Paris.
