Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Derick M. Cookson, son of Kristi LaFreniere of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Darryl Cookson of Windham, and his shipmates concluded Annual Exercise 2005, while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.

The event was a joint exercise between the U.S. Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.

Cookson is a 2002 graduate of Sea Breeze High School of Daytona Beach, Fla., and joined the Navy in August 2002.

Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Douglas W. Maher, son of Sandra Maher of Naples, recently was promoted to his current rank while serving with Marine Wing Support Squadron 172, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Okinawa, Japan.

Maher was promoted based on sustained superior job performance and proficiency in his designated specialty. He is a 2004 graduate of Canton High School of Canton, Mass., and joined the Marine Corps in September 2004.
