Kids afternoon

OXFORD – The Oxford Congregational Church Youth Group has invited parents of children ages 3 to 12 to send the children to a child care and cookie-decorating afternoon at the church from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17. The cost is $10 per child or a maximum of $20 per family.

Preregistration is requested by Friday, Dec. 16, as there is a limit of 50 children and a count is needed to assure enough cookies. For more information, contact Bob or Deb at 743-8153 or 210-2756.

Worship leader

PARIS – Silver Moore-Leamon will lead the worship service at the First Universalist Church, 36 Pine St., South Paris, on Sunday, Dec. 18. The service will begin at 10 a.m.

Moore-Leamon’s sermon is titled, “IRS or IHS: Whose Christmas is it?” The music will be by the choir and Forest Perkins, church organist. The Sunday school will be directed by Renee Wales and child care is provided. The coffee hour will follow in Good Cheer Hall. Everyone is welcome.

AARP trip

OXFORD – The Oxford Hills AARP will participate in a one-day trip on Sunday, Jan. 22, to see the 3:30 p.m. performance of “Disney On Ice – 100 Years of Magic” at the Cumberland Civic Center in Portland.

The ticket cost is $40/pp and includes the cost of the ticket and the bus. The bus will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the old Ames parking lot. Children are welcome and pay the group price.

Jazz featured

BETHEL – The State Street Traditional Jazz Band of Portland will be featured at the New Year’s Bethel celebration, playing two programs at the West Parish Congregational Church.

The program will present authentic New Orleans Jazz, including hymns, spirituals, parade tunes and popular songs of the day as they were played in New Orleans when the jazz art form was initially created.

Featured guest artist will be Johnny Battis, former clarinet and saxophone player with the New Yankee Rhythm Kings in Boston.

A special feature will be a tribute to the musicians displaced from their homes and workplaces in New Orleans by the recent Gulf Coast hurricanes.

Other performers include Mel Tukey, trumpet; Neal Shephard, piano; Bill Rayne, trombone; Don Whitney, drums; and Pat Whittaker, sousaphone.
