I wonder if those who insist on the politically correct words “happy holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas” realize what they are saying?
Webster’s American Dictionary of the English Language of 1828, as republished by the Foundation for American Christian Education, does not give a definition of the word “holiday,” but, instead, cross references to the word “holyday,” where the following definition is given: “A day set apart for commemorating some important event in history; a festival intended to celebrate some event deemed auspicious to the welfare of a nation; particularly an anniversary festival, devoted to religious solemnities; as Christmas holydays.”
So, OK, people can continue to wish me “happy holyday.” And I would thank them very much.
