NASHUA, N.H. (AP) – A city man has been charged with second-degree murder after a double stabbing that left one man dead and another critically wounded, the state attorney general’s office and city police said Sunday.

Brad Chartrand, 23, was arrested and charged with first-degree assault Saturday, shortly after the early morning stabbings. The second-degree murder charge was added Sunday after an autopsy.

Deputy Medical Examiner Jennifer Duval determined that Matthew Howland, 21, of Nashua, died of a stab wound to the chest and ruled the death was a homicide, Assistant Attorney General David Ruoff said.

The injured man was identified as Shane MacKenzie. He remained hospitalized in stable condition Sunday. Authorities declined to release any further information about him.

Chartrand was scheduled to be arraigned on both charges Monday in Nashua District Court. He faces life in prison with the possibility of parole if convicted on the murder charge, as well as up to 15 years on the first-degree assault charge.

Neighbors told The Telegraph the stabbing began with an argument between two women in a Chestnut Street apartment, which escalated after Chartrand and the other two men got involved. They said the three men all knew each other.
