HOULTON (AP) – A Houlton man was arrested and charged with murder in the slaying of a 57-year-old woman whose body was found earlier this month in her motel room in northern Maine, state police said Monday.

Daniel Boles, 30, is scheduled to make an initial appearance today in Caribou Superior Court, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman of the state Public Safety Department. Bowles was being held in the Aroostook County Jail following his arrest at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday at the state police barracks in Houlton.

Boles is charged in the death of Jacqueline Shorey, whose body was found inside her room at the Scottish Inn on Dec. 9.

Investigators said Shorey had been staying in the Houlton motel for several days when friends expressed concern because they were unable to reach her.

A motel manager found Shorey’s body. An autopsy was performed, but state police were not disclosing the cause of Shorey’s death for investigatory reasons, McCausland said Monday.

The spokesman said detectives were not able to confirm the suspect’s occupation.

Shorey had reportedly checked into the Bangor Street motel after spending time out of state.

McCausland said Shorey recently had been in Louisiana and returned to Maine to attend to some business. Police were told that Shorey was planning to move to Louisiana.

Shorey had been scheduled to appear at a hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court while in Maine, but did not show up.

While living in northern Maine, Shorey worked as a phlebotomist in the laboratory of Houlton Regional Hospital. She worked there until early fall. Shorey has previously lived in Danforth, friends said.
