FARMINGTON – Sandy River Unit of Girl Scouts held the annual cookie training and a dinner on Dec. 15 at the University of Maine at Farmington.

The training was presented by Chris Deon, unit cookie supervisor. She addressed the new changes and gave each troop their supplies for this year’s cookie campaign that begins Jan. 6. She also gave samples of the two new cookies being offered this year.

If there are any troops or individual girls who did not receive materials, they should contact Deon at 778-3634.

Cathy Rogers, service unit manager, congratulated leaders for their participation in the collection of food during the November food pantry drive. Rogers reported that 167 girls and adults participated and the food remained in the local pantries.

Rogers also reported that 81 participated in the Chester Greenwood parade and caroling event. Those who took part in one or both events will receive participation patches at the next meeting.

Sue Storer of Troop 2217, Weld, was presented the Outstanding Leader Pin. The award is given to leaders who are nominated by members of the troop leadership team or families of the girls.

Storer met training requirements as well as showed her leadership skills in offering the Girl Scout program and helping girls to meet the program goals: helping develop full potential, relate to others with increasing understanding, skill and respect; develop values to guide actions and provide the foundation for sound decision-making; contribute to society through the use of abilities and leadership skills, working in cooperation with others.

Storer has worked with the troop for seven years.

Judy Rogers, also of Troop 2217, received her 10-year volunteer pin and 15-year numeral guard for total years as a girl and adult. Amy Duval, Troop 191, Temple, and Perry Essman, Troop 823, Wilton, won the door prizes.

Upcoming dates for troop events: Jan. 6, cookie sales begin; Jan. 7, cookie badge day at UMF; Feb. 8, leaders’ meeting at UMF; and Feb. 20, sledding in Rangeley for all registered girls.
