FARMINGTON – County commissioners unanimously approved a $4.39 million budget for 2006 operations Tuesday.

Though the board went along with the Budget Committee’s approved spending plan, commissioners voiced concerns over several items in the budget. These included the cost of a new truck to be shared by county employees, program grants and money in the district attorney’s office account for wage increases for two employees.

The overall package reflects a $212,500 increase over this year’s budget.

Commissioners also approved an $840,435 unorganized territory budget to cover July 1, 2006, to June 30, 2007. Commissioners raised concerns about some amounts listed for services provided by other towns to townships and plantations. They plan to meet with representatives of those towns to discuss contracts in the future.

In the end, commissioners noted that just because money is in the budget, it doesn’t mean it has to be spent.

In other business, Emergency Management Director Tim Hardy said that the county has received a grant of more than $1,300 from the Maine Volunteer Council to put all-hazard weather alert systems in each school in Franklin County.

The alerts would give school officials a heads-up for pending weather conditions.
