CHAPLIN, Conn. (AP) – State police said a Rhode Island man was injured Wednesday morning when his small single-engine plane crashed not far from the Windham Airport in northeast Connecticut.

Albert Schmid, 76, of Exeter, R.I., was headed from Quonset Airport in North Kingstown, R.I., to Windham when he reported engine trouble about 9:45 a.m., said Trooper William Tate.

The plane hit several trees, then landed on the lawn of a sportsmen’s club on Chewink Road, about three miles northeast of the Windham Airport in a rural part of the state.

Schmid was the only person on board the plane, a 1969 Beech B23 Musketeer.

Among the first responders was a trooper assigned to the state fire marshal’s office, who noticed gasoline leaking and pulled Schmid from the plane.

He was taken to Backus Hospital in Norwich, where a spokeswoman said he was in fair condition Wednesday afternoon.

A spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration said the cause of the crash is not yet known and the investigation could take some time. The plane was destroyed.
