Nun Bun missing from coffeehouse

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Nun Bun is nowhere to be seen.

When Bob Bernstein arrived at his coffeehouse to assess the scene of an early Christmas morning break-in, the one thing he noticed missing was the cinnamon bun that bears a striking likeness to Mother Teresa.

Bernstein said he believes the culprit is someone angry over the shop displaying the world-famous pastry, which has been preserved with shellac. A jar of money next to the Nun Bun was not stolen.

“They went right for the bun,” he said. “Unfortunately I think it’s somebody who wanted to take it to destroy it.”

The Nun Bun gained worldwide attention in 1996 when a customer nearly took a bite of it before recognizing the revered nun in the folds of flaky pastry.

Kansas mayor to note Dadaism

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Mayor Boog Highberger wants to recognize Dadaism in a way suitable to the style of the early 20th-century anti-art movement.

Highberger plans to proclaim International Dadaism Month today during the city’s weekly commission meeting. But in the spirit of the Dadaists – who declared “art is dead” and rejected conventional forms, often making deliberately absurd works – the Lawrence mayor hasn’t picked a certain month to celebrate the movement.

Instead, International Dadaism Month will be Feb. 4, March 28, April 1, July 15, Aug. 2, Aug. 7, Aug. 16, Aug. 26, Sept. 18, Sept. 22, Oct. 1, Oct. 17 and Oct. 26.

To choose the dates, Highberger rolled dice and pulled numbers from a hat.

As part of the proclamation, Highberger will utter a phrase from a poem by the late Hugo Ball, a founder of Dada: “Zimzim urallala zimzim urallala zimzim zanzibar zimzalla zam.”

“I just think it is good to acknowledge that there is a place for chance and nonsense in every healthy lifestyle,” Highberger said.

Passer-by clings to shoplifters’ car

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) – Two women suspected of shoplifting at a Kmart outlet almost got away with it – until they tangled with Michael Cornwell.

Cornwell clung to their car’s windshield wipers for about a mile – at speeds he estimated at 70 to 80 mph – before the driver pulled into a mobile home park and the women fled.

The suspects were later arrested on charges of aggravated robbery, felonious assault and theft. Perfume, cologne and other items were found in the car, police said.

“I don’t believe in shoplifting,” Cornwell said.

Cornwell, his fiancée and his mother were headed into a Kmart about 10:30 p.m. Friday when two women ran from the store chased by employees.

NEW YORK (AP) – A Bronx man was arrested for allegedly killing a 22-year-old woman, stabbing her father when he came to her aid, and then turning the knife on himself, police said.

Sheldon Becker, 45, was arrested on charges of murder and attempted rape after the Christmas Day attack in the Throgs Neck section. Police said he stabbed himself in both arms.

Dimaris Lopez, who was stabbed in the chest during the attack, was pronounced dead on arrival at Jacobi Hospital, police said. Her father, who was stabbed in the chest and side, was in stable condition there.
