Madden opened the scoring 3:59 into the game, deflecting a point shot from Paul Martin. Sundin tied it 1-1 at 13:35 of the first, backhanding a nice feed from Tie Domi past a helpless Brodeur. The Leafs took the lead on a 5-on-3 power play with McCabe blasting his trademark shot past Brodeur at 16:20.

Toronto’s Darcy Tucker was clocked twice by crunching hits from Colin White and then inadvertently two-handed Brodeur behind the head, sending the Canadian Olympic goalie sprawling to the ice and earning a 2-minute penalty. Tucker later got a 5-minute match penalty for ripping the helmet off Cam Janssen in a fight and twice hitting him in the face with it. That will warrant an automatic review from NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell.

Notes: Toronto Fs Eric Lindros (wrist), Nik Antropov (knee) and Alexander Steen (thumb) were out. … Out for the Devils were Fs Grant Marshall (groin) and Patrik Elias (hepatitis A). … Monday’s game was the first of four this season between the Devils and Leafs. … Veteran D Tommy Albelin played his second game of the season after coming out of retirement to rejoin the Devils last week.
