RUMFORD – The Land Use Ordinance Committee continued work on a proposed land management ordinance Tuesday night that they hope will be ready for public action at the annual town meeting in June.

Assisting them was John Maloney, a planner with the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments, who also helped write the town’s comprehensive plan that was passed by residents in 1998.

So far, a map has been developed that shows 11 land use districts. These districts are: industrial, Rumford island, medical, two commercial, three residential, village, rural and mixed use.

In addition to the districts, two historic overlay areas were also designated to include Strathglass Park, and several turn-of-the-19th-century buildings in the downtown. Plans are to establish a Historic Preservation Commission that would provide oversight for the preservation of local landmarks and historic districts.

Specifics of the uses for each district will be worked out over the next few months. Town Manager Steve Eldridge said a public informational meeting and a public hearing will be held before a land use management ordinance is voted on.

The ordinance would provide regulations for how land in specific districts could be used and a map showing where each property and district is located.

The proposed ordinance will also be aligned with the town’s revitalization plan.

The committee meets on the first Tuesday of each month in the Municipal Building.
