RUMFORD – Police have yet to learn why an Orono woman veered off Route 2 in Rumford on Wednesday and crashed into a tree.
Investigating Patrolman David Bean said Thursday afternoon that he interviewed the driver, Sally Horan, 73, but said she couldn’t recall what happened.
“She said she didn’t think she fell asleep,” Bean said.
Based on Horan’s injuries and the fact that the brakes weren’t applied in the 415-foot-long ride down a snowy embankment and into the woods, he said he suspects she had her foot on the gas pedal.
Med-Care Director Dean Milligan said Thursday afternoon that he learned from a LifeFlight medical helicopter crew member that Horan suffered a fractured ankle, wrist nd ribs.
Her husband, James Horan, 70, suffered a fractured hip, he added.
Med-Care took Sally Horan to Rumford Hospital and then to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston after the wreck.
James Horan, who was in critical condition, and had to be extricated by firefighters, was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to the Lewiston hospital.
A CMMC spokeswoman said Thursday afternoon that the Horan family asked the hospital not to release condition information about either patient.
