Six Maine groups will share more than $460,000 in grants to improve health and expand access to health care for uninsured Mainers
The Maine Health Access Foundation, a private nonprofit group, recently awarded the grants. The winners include:
• USM Center for Continuing Education, $81,000 to address the shortage of nurses and other health care workers in Androscoggin County.
• Family Planning Association of Maine, $80,000 to train pharmacists to provide emergency contraception.
• State of Maine Department of Corrections, nearly $49,000 to improve behavioral services provided to prisoners.
• Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, nearly $98,000 to help low-income people find transportation to doctors.
• Healthways Regional Medical Center at Lubec, $100,000 to improve health care for the elderly.
• Youth and Family Services Inc., $53,000 to improve health care in the Somerset County Jail.
