POLAND – Alert neighbors are credited with helping police solve a pair of afternoon burglaries Monday in Poland.

A man and woman from Casco were arrested in that town Monday night after police tracked them down with a license plate number provided by witnesses.

At about 4:30 p.m., police from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office and the Mechanic Falls Police Department went to Harris Hill Road where a home had reportedly been broken into.

There, police found signs of a burglary and neighbors who saw a man leaving the house in a green Chevrolet Lumina.

Sheriff’s Office Detective Riley Bryant and Deputy Brian Smith with his police dog Juno began investigating the scene of the break in.

Meanwhile, with the license plate number provided by the neighbor, police sent out an alert to other departments in the area advising them to be on the lookout for the van.

Early Monday night, Maine State Police spotted the vehicle in Casco. Inside they found 27-year-old Joseph Jines and his wife, 22-year-old Holly Roewer.

Police said the pair admitted to breaking into the home on Harris Hill Road and another on Bakerstown Road where electronic equipment was stolen.

Jines and Roewer were each charged with burglary and theft. Roewer was also arrested on outstanding warrants unrelated to the break-ins, police said.

The burglaries remained under investigation Monday night. Police praised the residents on Harris Hill Road for keeping their eyes on their neighbors’ homes and providing accurate information to investigators.
