LEWISTON – Memories of Lewiston’s past and dreams of its future were on the minds of Mayor Lionel C. Guay and city councilors Tuesday night.

In an upbeat speech that listed all of Lewiston’s economic development wins in the past few years, Guay, the councilors and members of the School Committee swore their oaths for another two years in office.

Guay said he has vivid memories of growing up in Lewiston.

“When I took office two years ago those memories meant much to me,” Guay said. “I wanted the opportunity to give back and insure that people today have memories as special as mine.”

New industrial development in southern Lewiston – including the Wal-Mart distribution center and the new Gendron Industrial park – is part of that. So is Andover College’s Lisbon Street campus and all of the Southern Gateway development, new restaurants, new retail and a redeveloped Colisee.

“The residents are starting to see that now and identify with their city and its needs and what it has to offer,” he said.

Councilors reappointed Ward 2’s Renee M. Bernier to the job of council president. Bernier will fill in for Guay if he is unable to attend a City Council meeting. In her address, Bernier also boasted about Lewiston’s economic development successes. She also urged the residents of Lewiston to get more involved in their government. She urged them to attend meetings, volunteer for boards and committees and communicate with their councilors.

“Most importantly, always vote your convictions,” Bernier said. “We are a democracy, and this is your city.”

The Lewiston School Committee reappointed Ward 4’s Jim Handy to another two-year term as chairman.
