SOUTH BERWICK — Carol Eva Lilly Bond, 68, beloved wife of John O. Bond Sr. of 50 Waterside Lane, died Jan. 3, 2006, after a courageous nine and a half year battle with metastatic breast cancer.

Carol was born in South Berwick, on March 16, 1937, the daughter of Richard A. and A. Pauline (Erekson) Lilly. She was a 1954 graduate of Berwick Academy, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and still holds the record of 57 points scored in one basketball game. She graduated from Gorham State Teachers College in 1958.

During her distinguished teaching career, she taught in Portsmouth, N.H., Warner Robins, Ga., and at Central School in South Berwick for 26 years, before retiring in June 1991. She was the girls’ basketball coach during the last year of South Berwick High School.

She was a life-member of the National Retired Teachers Association, a member of the Maine Retired Education Association, the York County Retired Teachers Association and a charter member and past secretary and treasurer of Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. She was a past president, secretary, building representative and member of the negotiation team of the local Quamphegan Teachers Association, while teaching in SAD 35.

She was a member of the First Parish Federated Church in South Berwick, where she taught Sunday school and was a choir member while in high school. She was also a member of the Old Berwick Historical Society.

She was a member of the Sarah Orne Jewett Chapter No. 176 Order of the Eastern Star. She proudly wore her past grand commander’s wife’s pin as well as her lady’s gold cross of the Red Cross Of Constantine, her 33rd wife’s pin and the Grand Encampment of Knights Templar Companion of the Temple Jewel while traveling in Masonic circles with her husband — most especially around the Northeast to the Grand Commandery conclaves.

She loved taking photographs on her many trips and around South Berwick, especially during the fall. She also enjoyed playing the piano for sing-a-longs — particularly during the Christmas season. Carol was an avid reader and enjoyed writing poems for special occasions. She treasured greatly all of the many friendships she made over the years. But, most of all, she cherished her family and was proud of their accomplishments.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, she is survived by her husband; daughters, Dr. Cheryl L. Dozier and her husband, Joseph Chiseri, of Voorheesville, N.Y., and Ann Bond Veino and her husband, Robert, of Eliot; sons, John O. Bond Jr. and his wife, Patti, of York and James B. Bond, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Linda L. Burdick and her husband, Greig, of Little River, S.C.; a nephew, Matthew Burdick and his wife, Keisha, of Durham, N.C.; and her wonderful grandchildren, Katharine, Michael, and Nicholas Chiseri, Brianne Veino and son, Kynen, Ian and Patrick Bond and Jaremy and Michael Bond; also by an aunt, uncle and cousins.

She was predeceased by a nephew, Bryon Burdick in September 1989; her father in December 1998; and her mother in May 2004.

Carol’s family wishes to extend special thanks and appreciation to Dr. Paul Poulin and his staffs in York and at Portsmouth Regional Hospital for their professional and compassionate care during her lengthy illness.
