Nancy Willard of Woodstock wrote a very good letter, published Dec. 29, rightly criticizing the congressional Republicans’ “irresponsible fiscal policies,” which steal from the poor to give to the rich. However, she went astray when she said “I wish to thank Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins for their long-standing opposition to drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.”

Perhaps Willard was not aware that in December both senators voted in favor of drilling in ANWR. These two Republican loyalists pose as independents, but when the party calls, they salute.

There is no way to stop the Republican onslaught against American values without ending the Republican majorities in the Congress, which means voting against Snowe in November.
