HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees has purchased the home where Johnny Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash, lived for 35 years.
Gibb and his wife, Linda, bought the rustic retreat on Old Hickory Lake for an undisclosed amount, a lawyer for the Cash family said Wednesday. Hendersonville is 13 miles northeast of downtown Nashville.
“This place will always be the spiritual home for the Cashes,” Gibb said. “My wife, Linda, and I are determined to preserve it, to honor their memory. We fell in love with it; it’s an incredible honor for us. We plan to use the home to write songs because of the musical inspiration.”
The 13,880-square-foot home and 4.6-acre property was purchased by Balinda LLC, a Florida company owned by Gibb and his wife, according to Nashville lawyer Robert L. Sullivan, who administers the Cash estate for the family.
The house, visited by everyone from U.S. presidents to ordinary fans, went on the market in June with an asking price of $2.9 million. The price was lowered this fall to $2.5 million.
Cash died in 2003, soon after the death of June Carter Cash. His hits include “Ring of Fire,” “Folsom Prison Blues” and “I Walk the Line.”
The Bee Gees are best known for their hits of the disco era in the late 1970s such as “Jive Talkin”‘ and “Night Fever.”

WOODSIDE, Calif. (AP) – Steve Jobs, chief executive of Apple Computer Inc., lost his bid to demolish a 17,000-square-foot Woodside mansion that preservationists call a historical treasure.
A San Mateo County Superior Court judge has tentatively ruled that the town improperly granted Jobs a demolition permit last year for “The Jackling House,” which was designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style for Utah Copper Co. magnate Daniel Jackling.
Jobs bought the house in 1984 but hasn’t lived there for a decade, saying he wants to tear it down and build a new, smaller unit that would be more appropriate for his family. They now live in Palo Alto.
Preservationists cried foul and said the house should be protected. A group calling itself Uphold Our Heritage sued the city to stop the demolition.
Woodside officials said they were torn about the decision but couldn’t force Jobs to fix the house, which had been vandalized and developed dry rot. Jobs had covered most of the windows with plywood.
But before the demolition could proceed, officials forced Jobs to try to give the home away to anyone who could afford the roughly $7.5 million needed to restore it.
About 100 people asked about the offer after it appeared on television and in newspaper articles, but a deal never materialized.
Jobs’ lawyer, Howard Ellman, said he will likely appeal the judge’s decision.

NEW YORK (AP) – Lindsay Lohan, who was hospitalized in Miami this week for an asthma attack, tells Vanity Fair in an interview that she has dabbled in drugs and battled bulimia.
The 19-year-old actress-pop singer says that following the success of 2004’s “Mean Girls,” she dabbled in drugs “a little,” but quickly adds: “I’ve gotten that out of my system.” The issue hits newsstands Tuesday.
When asked if her drug use included cocaine, Lohan denies it, saying, “I don’t want people to think that I’ve done … you know what I mean?”
She does, though, more openly discuss last year’s drastic weight loss. Lohan acknowledges that she was suffering from bulimia: “I was making myself sick.”
Lohan says that before hosting NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” Tina Fey and “SNL” executive producer Lorne Michaels sat her down.
“They said, “You need to take care of yourself. We care about you too much, and we’ve seen too many people do this, and you’re talented,’ and I just started bawling,” Lohan says. “I knew I had a problem and I couldn’t admit it.”
“I saw that “SNL’ after I did it,” she adds. “My arms were disgusting. I had no arms.”
Lohan says she’s doing much better: “You have to learn for yourself and you have to hit rock bottom sometimes to get yourself back to the top.”
Lohan co-stars in Robert Altman’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” due in theaters in June. She has been filming “Bobby,” directed by Emilio Estevez, about the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.
She’s also set to begin shooting “Chapter 27,” a film about John Lennon’s killer, Mark David Chapman, in two weeks.
Lohan’s mother and manager, Dina, told OK! magazine Wednesday that her daughter was getting better after being hospitalized Monday night for an asthma attack.
“I don’t think people understand how truly terrifying it is to have an asthma attack,” Dina Lohan was quoted as saying. “I’ll be taking her home to New York to recuperate.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards, who seemed to have reconciled, have filed legal papers asking a private arbitrator to handle their divorce.
Lawyers for the couple filed the papers Wednesday in Los Angeles, said Sheen’s publicist, Stan Rosenfield. “They asked the court to go to a private arbitrator. They want to keep it private,” he said.
Rosenfield wouldn’t comment further.
Richards’ publicist, Cheryl Maisel, also confirmed the filing but refused to elaborate.
The papers, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, requested that the case be taken out of court and assigned to retired commissioner Jill S. Robbins.
Richards filed for divorce in March after three years of marriage. The relationship appeared to dissolve just months before the 34-year-old actress gave birth to the couple’s second child, Lola, in June. They also have an older daughter, Sam.
Before Wednesday’s filing, the couple appeared to be on the road to reconciliation. In November, the 40-year-old actor flashed his wedding ring on CBS’ “Late Late Show,” telling host Craig Ferguson “things are really good.”
Richards and Sheen met while shooting the independent film “Good Advice” in 2000 and appeared in 2003’s “Scary Movie 3.”
Sheen stars in the CBS sitcom “Two and a Half Men.” His screen credits include “Platoon,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and the “Hot Shots!” movies.
Richards, a former Bond girl, also appeared in “Wild Things” and “Starship Troopers.”

MALIBU, Calif. (AP) – Nick Nolte has successfully completed probation ordered after his 2002 plea of no contest to a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of drugs, a judge ruled Wednesday.
Nolte was present at the hearing before Judge Lawrence Mira.
“I’m about to do “Pride and Glory,’ a film in New York with Colin Farrell, and he’ll just be coming out of rehab so he’ll have a lot of support (from me),” the 64-year-old actor told syndicated TV show “The Insider” outside court.
Farrell was being treated for exhaustion and dependency on medication prescribed after a back injury, his publicist, Danica Smith, said last month.
Nolte was taken into custody Sept. 11, 2002, after being seen driving his luxury car erratically along Pacific Coast Highway and then failing a field sobriety test. He was accused of being under the influence of the so-called “date-rape” drug gamma-hydroxybutyrate, or GHB.
His lawyer said later that Nolte apparently consumed GHB inadvertently while taking a weightlifting supplement. The actor voluntarily entered a substance abuse rehabilitation center for several weeks.
In December 2002, Nolte pleaded no contest to driving under the influence of drugs and was placed on three years’ probation, with the conditions that he undergo counseling and drug testing.
Nolte, who has attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings since 1989, has appeared in dozens of movies, including “Cape Fear,” “The Prince of Tides” and “48 Hrs.”
His upcoming project with Farrell is a generational drama about a family of police officers.
