VOORHEES, N.J. (AP) – Enrico Di Giuseppe, a tenor who sang with the Metropolitan and New York City opera companies, has died. He was 73.
Di Giuseppe died Dec. 31 of cancer, his wife, soprano Lorna Ceniceros, told The New York Times.
While with the City Opera, he performed with Beverly Sills in many of her notable appearances, and recorded “Norma” with her.
Di Giuseppe, who was born in Philadelphia and specialized in the Italian repertory, made his City Opera debut in 1965 as Michele in Menotti’s “Saint of Bleecker Street.” He eventually performed 26 roles in 16 years there.
He debuted at the Met in 1970 in “Madame Butterfly.” Two years later, he appeared opposite Joan Sutherland in Donizetti’s “The Daughter of the Regiment.” Adding a touch of humor, the taller Sutherland patted him on the head before their embrace.
He made his final Met appearance in 1986.
