BOSTON (AP) – A dog was electrocuted while walking on a Boston sidewalk and its owner wants to know who is responsible.

“Somebody needs to be held responsible,” Katherine Bannon told the Boston Herald. “It’s so dangerous. I would like to not see this happen to other dogs.”

The 6-year-old dog, a lab mix named Killian, was electrocuted on Sunday evening when she stepped on a metal sidewalk cover in the city’s Charlestown section. The dog howled in pain, then collapsed and died.

James W. Hunt, Boston’s chief of environment and energy, said the city is investigating whether the dog was shocked by stray voltage from a city-owned streetlight.

At least three other dogs have been electrocuted in the city since 2000, and there have been many other reports of dogs receiving electrical shocks.

“One instance of stray voltage is one too many,” Hunt said. “This is a most unfortunate incident and our hearts go out to the dog owner.”

Last year, NStar and the city created a task force that tested 120,000 infrastructure pieces in the city and found that more than 60 had stray voltage, which they fixed.
