Seniors speaker

LEWISTON – David R. Robert, a licensed funeral director from the Fortin Group Funeral Homes of Lewiston and Auburn, will be the speaker at the Holy Cross Seniors meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, in the church hall.

He will discuss planning a funeral or cremation services, the importance of a will and living will, social security benefits at death, veterans’ benefits as well as monuments and service personalization. A question and answer period will follow. All area seniors are welcome and each member will receive a personal planning guide and a living will. A social with light refreshments will end the afternoon.

Seniors meal

AUBURN – The New Auburn Senior Citizens will have a spaghetti dinner at noon Wednesday, Jan 18, in the St. Louis Hall basement, Dunn Street. Tickets are $3 and are for members only. They must be purchased by Wednesday, Jan. 11.

The regular meeting was held Jan. 4 after installation of new officers by Carmen Mercier. Officers are Virginia Levasseur, president; Fern Bussiere, vice president; Irene Delorme, secretary; Delice Blair, treasurer; and Joyce Bickford, corresponding secretary and publicity.

All volunteers were thanked by the president for their help in 2005. January birthdays were noted, small gifts given and the birthday song sung. New members welcomed were Paulette Laroche and Jeanne Violette.

The club is planning to have an Easter hat contest in April. More information will be forthcoming. Trips planned include a sugar trip in March and a two-day trip to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.

A moment of silence was held for two members: Theresa Chabot and Delores Roy, who died in December. The newsletter with upcoming events will be sent out every three months. Pot of gold winners were Rita Gallant, Florence Bergeron and George Poirier. The meeting adjourned, a light lunch was served and bingo followed. Open Bingo for seniors 60 and over will be held Jan. 11 and 25.

College planning

LEWISTON – The Maine Educational Opportunity Center will offer an “Essentials of College Planning” workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at the Lewiston Career Center, 5 Mollison Dr. MEOC Adviser Christy Le will lead the free session.

Center services include assistance in choosing a college, tutoring, personal and financial counseling, career counseling, assistance in applying to college, workplace and college visits, and assistance in applying for financial aid.

Bridge results

LEWISTON – The Lewiston-Auburn Social Bridge Club winners at the Multi-Purpose Center on Jan. 9 were: first, Mary Leahey and Luke Merry; second, Nancy Farmer and Marta Clements; third/fourth tie, Marlene and Conrad Violette with Cynthia Bonsey and Dick Allen; third in B, Alberta Turner and Helen Little; second in C, Allie Boyer and Barbara Beegel.

Store appreciation

LEWISTON – Aubuchon Hardware will host its fifth annual Community Appreciation Day on Saturday, Jan. 14. Proceeds from this year’s event in Lewiston will help raise money for Lewiston High School’s Project Graduation 2006 and the Good Shepard Food-Bank. Proceeds in Lisbon Falls will help raise money for the Green Thumb Gang.
