A great opportunity could be in the making for the town of Turner.

In the past several years, town residents have heard disagreements about the location of school administrative offices being put into the Leavitt Institute building. During that time, we have heard disagreements about the location of a new town office building being put in a flood zone.

The school administrative officials have shown an interest in possibly having one building constructed in Turner Center to house both the Turner Town Office and the school administrative offices.

What an opportunity to bring this community together. One building, sharing meeting rooms, conference rooms, cafeteria, restroom facilities, one well and one septic system. It’s a common-sense approach to saving both the school and town finances. The state is encouraging communities to use sound economic policies. This could also work toward pooled future purchases by the town and school.

At present, our town office is located in a flood zone, with no well and in an old building that should be torn down completely. And the school administrative offices and adult education are crammed into the same building.

After talking to the school business manager several years ago and again more recently, common sense tells me this opportunity should be explored by the board of selectmen, the school board and school administrators, soon.

Building in Turner Center would save taxpayer dollars.
