FARMINGTON – The Literacy Volunteers Scrabble Fundraiser for Literacy will take place from 1 to 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, in Ricker Hall Addition, Rooms 202 and 205, on the University of Maine at Farmington campus.
It is open to all with a requested table fee and will include prizes and refreshments. All proceeds will benefit Literacy Volunteers of Franklin and Somerset counties.
Registration will begin at 12:30 p.m., and prizes will be awarded after the games. Participants may preregister by calling Literacy Volunteers at 778-3460 or by mailing registration to Literacy Volunteers, 108 Fairbanks Road, Farmington, ME 04938. Preregistration is $6 ($5 for students/seniors) and it’s a dollar more at the door.
Approximately 21 to 23 percent of the population of the United States functions at the lowest literacy level. Literacy Volunteers serving Franklin and Somerset counties work on the local level to fight a national problem by providing adults with professionally trained and managed volunteer tutors.
Last year Literacy Volunteers worked with more than 100 students in Franklin County.
All LV tutors are volunteers but the organization needs help to sustain its efforts and cover expenses for part-time staff, books, dictionaries, workbooks and supplies for students.
Literacy Volunteers will hold another Scrabble Fundraiser for Literacy on April 1 at the same time and location.
