LEWISTON – Members of the Lewiston-Auburn Veterans Council and relatives of military personnel gathered at Veterans Memorial Park recently to observe anniversaries of terrorist bombings of the U.S. Marine Corps barracks on Oct. 23, 1983, and the U.S.S. Cole on Oct. 17, 2000.

A total of 251 Marines and Navy personnel were killed in the barracks bombing in Beirut, Lebanon., and 17 crew members were killed in the ship bombing at the refueling dock in Yemen, Aden.

The program opened with singing of the “Star-Spangled Banner” by the assembly. Post 22, American Legion, Adjutant Jerry DerBoghosian gave the invocation.

Roland Cyr, past commandant of the Central Maine Marine Corps League, read the history of the Marine Corps while DerBoghosian presented the history of the Navy.

Singing of the Marine Corps and Navy hymns followed, and the program closed with “God Bless America” by the assembly.
