GREENE – A Winthrop man remained at a Lewiston hospital Friday, a day after the motorcycle he was riding and a car collided on Route 202.

Police said Michael Van Ginkel, 40, suffered various injuries in the 4:30 p.m. wreck and that part of his leg had to be amputated as a result.

He remained at Central Maine Medical Center on Friday night and he was listed in stable condition, according to a nursing supervisor.

Van Ginkel was driving his Harley-Davidson toward Augusta on Route 202 when a car driven in the opposite direction turned in front of him, police said.

Gregory Boom, 23, of North Monmouth was turning left into the post office parking lot and did not see Van Ginkel on his motorcycle as a pair of other cars passed.

“He was focused on those two cars and didn’t see the motorcycle in between,” said Maine State Police Trooper Keith Frank.

Boom was shaken but not seriously hurt, police said. Van Ginkel was taken to CMMC.

A section of Route 202 was closed down after the crash as police and emergency paramedics responded. Traffic in both directions was rerouted around the crash site.

Maine State Police were continuing to investigate the wreck. The air was unseasonably warm at the time, which may have prompted Van Ginkel to take his Harley out for the day. Frank said he believed Van Ginkel bought the bike in November. “I guess he rode it to work that morning and he was on his way home,” Frank said.
