In regard to George Schott and the young mother who received the eviction notice, one reader wrote that it was wrong for the mother to “use” her child by having him hold a sign that said, “Help me.” Others might say it’s a story of a rich businessman who is used to getting his way no matter what the circumstances.

A few things are certain, though. On a financial deal of such magnitude, one would think that every detail would be worked out from start to finish. All T’s crossed, all I’s dotted, especially the details of removing families from their homes by way of eviction. One would assume that this detail would be carried out with much forethought and sensitivity toward the residents living there. After all, it was just before Christmas, and cold weather was a factor.

Let’s be clear on something. Schott did not purchase the mall and surrounding areas for the good of the community. He did it to make money. Schott hired the company that tore down the children’s play equipment, cut the trees and spray-painted the building. He can two-step to the media all he wants, but the message seems quite clear: get out!
