Mazda already builds the shortest minivan, the MPV, so likely there was a spirited discussion as to why the company needed an even smaller minivan, the Mazda5.
Possibly it’s because Mazda insists that even though the Mazda5 has three rows of seats and sliding doors on the side, it isn’t a minivan. It’s a sports wagon.
Whatever.
The Mazda5 (not to be confused with the MX-5, the Miata) is based on the Mazda3’s front-wheel-drive sedan and hatchback platform, sharing the 3’s 2.3-liter, 157-horsepower, four-cylinder engine. It’s offered with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. I would imagine the manual might be a little more fun to drive, but the automatic in the test model was fine. The four-cylinder engine is smooth and has enough low-end power to make passing a non-event. Fuel mileage is rated at 21 miles per gallon in the city, 26 on the highway.
Inside, the Mazda5’s packaging is sensible and well-executed. The front and middle seats are roomy, but the rear pair are best for kids or adults who are grateful for a ride. All four rear and middle seats fold down independently.
Standard safety equipment abounds, including side and side-curtain air bags and antilock brakes. The base Mazda5 is the Sport, and ours was the uplevel Touring, which has more standard creature comforts, such as a sunroof and six-disc CD player. The only option was the $900 automatic transmission, for an out-the-door price of $20,410.
Around town, the smaller size is a definite plus when parking or navigating traffic. On the highway, though, the ride is rougher than you would get in a regular minivan, but it isn’t severe.
This isn’t the first time manufacturers have tried the less-is-more approach to mini-minivans: Others include the nice Mitsubishi Expo from 1992, and the less-nice Nissan Axxess.
The Mazda5, though, just might make it work. That said, if you’re interested in room, don’t overlook the MPV – Mazda dealers may be more willing to negotiate on the MPV than the brand-new Mazda5.
