BETHEL – Bethel Historical Society Executive Director Stanley R. Howe held an open house on Jan. 2 for volunteers who assisted the society in one or more projects in 2005.

Howe holds the open house each year in his ancestral home, the John Hastings Homestead, ca. 1821.

Hastings’ wife, Abigail, was a sister to Dr. Moses Mason’s wife, Agnes, and also a sister of O’Neil Robinson’s wife, Betsey. The house was decorated for the holiday season with items from many eras, some extending back to the 1870s and 1880s.

More than 50 volunteers attended the reception, which featured mulled cider simmering on the 1890s cook stove and special treats throughout several rooms.
