PERU – A West Paris man escaped injury early Sunday afternoon when his pickup slid and rolled off Worthley Pond Road in Peru, state police said.

Lesley Adams, 46, of West Paris, who was driving west at 1 p.m. in a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, lost control on snow-covered glare ice about a half mile from Route 108, said Trooper Dan Hanson.

The truck slid sideways, spun around and rolled off the opposite lane, narrowly missing a large tree and utility pole. Adams refused treatment, said Med-Care Ambulance Director Dean Milligan at the scene.

A small dog inside the truck also escaped injury.

Sunday’s winter storm, which followed Saturday’s torrential rains, created hazardous driving conditions across western Maine.

According to Oxford County dispatch in Paris, there were several accidents and slide-offs throughout the day, but only minor injuries reported at a few.

Bethel Patrolman Phil Taylor was busy handling several accidents that began at 11:41 a.m. at the foot of Blake Hill on Route 26 at Chandler Hill Road with a two-car collision. Minor injuries were reported.

“We need sand out here badly, it’s all glare ice,” he told a dispatcher.

Vehicles continued to slide off the road there, before a car crashed into a tree by 3 p.m. at 899 Walkers Mills Road, also known as Route 26.

Hanson said he sent a trooper to help Bethel police while he processed the Peru wreck.

By 3:30 p.m., Rumford police dispatcher Susan Milligan said they only had one slide-off on Route 2, and that was at 11:10 a.m.

A dispatcher at Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in Farmington said police there also only had a few accidents, but nothing serious.

Accidents were still continuing in Bethel on Route 26, though, with a rollover reported at 4:14 p.m.
