NEWCASTLE (AP) – Two suspects in a bank robbery in Newcastle were arrested Tuesday following a police chase through several towns in Lincoln County.

One of the men entered the Gardiner Savings Bank shortly after 10 a.m., showed a weapon and made off with an undisclosed amount of money, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department. He made his a getaway in a dual-wheeled pickup truck driven by an accomplice.

Witnesses spotted the truck speeding off and police came across it near the Nobleboro-Damariscotta town line, said Lincoln County Sheriff Todd Brackett.

A chase ensued during which the pickup rammed two police cruisers before it ran over a spike mat on Route 213 in Newcastle and rolled over, Brackett said. The two men were apprehended after attempting to flee.

The suspects’ names were not immediately released, and charges were expected to be formally field Tuesday night.

Brackett said Detective Sgt. Ken Hatch of the sheriff’s office and Waldoboro police Officer Jeff Fuller were injured during the chase and taken to a hospital in Damariscotta.

Hatch was released and Fuller was transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland with non-critical injuries, Brackett said.
