MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) – A Coast Guard crewman was rescued Thursday afternoon after falling overboard in the chilly Connecticut River.
The man was part of a crew on the Coast Guard “Bollard,” a 65-foot cutter doing maintenance work on navigation aids. He fell in about 12:30 p.m. and was able to swim to the bank.
Authorities said he was spotted about a mile south of the Middletown power plant but was in an area that vehicles or boats could not reach. A state police helicopter was able to land near him and brought him to safety. A Coast Guard spokeswoman said he was taken to Middlesex Hospital and treated for hypothermia. He was in good condition.
Officials said the water temperature was between 38-41 degrees.
