LEWISTON – Playing in the snow safely and warmly is the focus Saturday of a program aimed at new Lewiston residents.

WinterKids’ Welcome to Winter features seminars and games to introduce winter activities to adults and children who aren’t used to cold weather.

Everyone is invited to the event, which runs from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Lewiston Multi-Purpose Center.

“As Maine becomes a new home for people from countries that don’t experience a snowy winter, it’s imperative that we help these families prepare for a Maine winter and show them how to get out and enjoy it,” said Carla Marcus, WinterKids executive director.

Statistics show there is sometimes an increase in weight in families relocated to a colder climate in the United States due to a change in eating habits and exercise.

L.L. Bean representatives will teach a seminar on dressing warmly for cold weather and walking safely on ice and snow. Activities include snowshoeing, snow sculpting, snow tubing and sledding. The event also offers a snow-themed scavenger hunt.

Hannaford will provide free snacks, and free hats, mittens, scarves and headbands will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Those items are being donated by SEARCH, a Catholic Charities Maine program.

It’s being sponsored by TD Banknorth, L.L. Bean, Weight Watchers, Healthy Maine Partnerships and Hannaford.
