LIVERMORE – Maurice (Moe) Laverdiere has moved from highway department driver and equipment operator, a position he had held since 2001, to highway foreman.

After former highway foreman Bert Bryant suddenly tendered his resignation on Jan. 11, Laverdiere stepped up to the plate and was unanimously appointed by the selectmen in a special meeting. The board also voted to make Ronald Greenwood a full-time highway employee. Both appointments are on a 90-day-trial period.

At Tuesday night’s regularly scheduled selectmen’s meeting, Laverdiere brought the members up to date on various road conditions. The fall and winter rains have damaged the roads and frost in some places is at least 2-3 feet deep, he told the board.

Portions of roads have been slowly washing away under the black tops. Quick fixes can be made in many areas, he said, but more extensive work will need to be done in the late spring and early summer, once the waters have receded and the ground has thawed.

Laverdiere reported problems with deteriorated or plugged culverts and ice buildup at places such as Nelson, River and Hathaway roads.

Administrative Assistant Kurt Schaub said that there is grant money available from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for these projects. Laverdiere was asked to make a list to be submitted at the next budget committee meeting.

Selectmen also voted to appoint Irma Bowles to a new two-year term as registrar of voters, a position she has held since 1967.
