NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (AP) – Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. said Monday that it will close its distribution facility in North Haven in the coming months, eliminating about 850 jobs.

The North Haven facility and a distribution and office center in Landover, Md., owned by Stop and Shop’s sister company, Giant Food, have been sold to affiliates of Preferred Real Estate Investments of Pennsylvania for about $90 million.

Stop & Shop, a unit of Dutch grocer Ahold Ltd., said work handled by the North Haven facility will be moved to a distribution center in Freetown, Mass., and to a third-party supplier, the company said. Stop & Shop said it plans to increase staffing at the Freetown center to take on the additional work.

“Unfortunately, the location, size and age of this facility limit our ability to service our stores in the most logistically effective way,” said Marc Smith, chief executive.
