MONMOUTH – The Theater at Monmouth is touring a production of Shakespeare’s “Henry V” drama, which will be presented at the Franco-American Heritage Center at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2.
For the second year in a row, The Theater at Monmouth has been selected as the only company in Northern New England, and one of only 22 companies across the country to participate in the Shakespeare in American Communities: Shakespeare for a New Generation program.
With financial support from the National Endowment for the Arts through Arts Midwest, and an Artists in Maine Communities grant from the Maine Arts Commission, The Theater At Monmouth is touring with a full production of “Henry V.”
“Henry V” is the story of King Henry, who was first seen when he was a younger man, Prince Hal, in the plays “Henry IV” parts one and two. The story of “Henry V” is first a story of a young man’s coming of age. As Prince Hal, he was known to hang out with the “bedlam boys,” a band of clowns, led by Falstaff, one of Shakespeare’s most popular characters.
The story of “Henry V” begins with King Henry determining that a previous treaty with France requires that he is the next in line for the French crown. The French disagree and war is declared. The center of the story is of the “band of brothers,” the English army fighting against the larger and professionally trained army of the French. The tale culminates with the famous battle of Agincourt.
While there are more than two dozen characters in the play, The Theater At Monmouth’s production features a cast of eight actors, some playing as many as eight roles. The actors are Jeri Pitcher, Henry Balemore, Michael Holmes, Dennis Price, Frank Omar, Christine Piche, Augie Truhn and Kati Stodd. The play, with its many visually stunning moments, is a perfect introduction to Shakespeare for those unfamiliar with his plays, and will also please Shakespeare fans used to seeing Shakespeare performed with twice as many actors, according to a spokesman for the troupe.
