SOUTH PORTLAND – The Portland Players are presenting “Godspell,” directed and choreographed by Michael Donovan.

The production features music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, with musical direction by Becky Michals-Rinaldi.

Performances run through Sunday, Feb. 5, at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 2:30 Sundays at the theater at 420 Cottage Road.

“Godspell,” which was a big off-Broadway and Broadway success, has songs such as “Day By Day,” “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord” and “Save the People.” The musical is a modern-day version of the Gospels, opening with John the Baptist calling a group of young New Yorkers from their workday lives to follow, learn from Jesus.

They form an acting troupe that enacts the parables through song and dance, comedy and mime. Jesus’ ministry ends with a last supper, his crucifixion in a junkyard and, the following morning, his body being carried aloft by his apostles back into the world of the living on the streets of New York.

Tickets are $19 or $17 for seniors and children. People can reserve tickets by calling the box office at 799-7337.
