LEWISTON – Walter C. Asselin, 69, a resident of Bridge Street in Jay, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 25, at St. Mary’s Hospital after a long illness.

He was born on Aug. 22, 1936, in Strong, the son of Leo Paul and Marjorie Baker Asselin and attended the schools of Strong. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, during the Korean War. On June 2, 1967, he married the former Ina Harris in Weld.

He worked as a truck driver for Callahan Brothers Construction Co. and also for Beisaw’s. He was an avid outdoorsman’ enjoying hunting, fishing, camping, horseshoes and all outdoor sports. He also enjoyed woodworking and playing pool. He is survived by his wife of 38 years of Jay; three daughters, Bonnie Chasse and her husband, Thomas, of Mexico, Rhonda Schmidt, of Jay and Cheryl Schmidt and her husband, Corey, of Fayette; two brothers, Clarence Asselin, of North Anson, William Espeaignnette, of North Jay; a half-brother, Merrill Briggs and his wife, Juanita, of South Portland; half-sisters, Clara Varney and her husband, Al, of South Harpswell and Sharon Judkins and her husband, William, of South Portland; stepbrothers, Dale Briggs and his wife, Phyllis, of East Dixfield and Loren Briggs and his wife, Cora, of Livermore Falls; stepsister, Phyllis Stanton, of Harrison.
