ORONO – Josh Soares scored two goals and Mike Hamilton had a goal and an assist to lead Maine to 4-1 win over New Hampshire at Alfond Arena on Friday.
Billy Ryan opened the scoring for the Black Bears (18-9) with a power play tally 4:01 into the second period.
Andrew tied it for New Hampshire (13-10-4) at the 11:41 mark before Soares notched the first of his two goals, this one on the power play, to give Maine the lead for good.
Hamilton’s goal 1:13 into the third put the Black Bears up 3-1 before Soares capped the scoring with an empty-net goal. Ben Bishop stopped 22 shots for Maine.
Colby 5, Hamilton 1
WATERVILLE – Five different players scored goals as Colby grabbed a 5-1 win from Hamilton in men’s hockey action Friday.
USM 2, Castleton 1
CASTLETON, Vt. – Junior center Mark Carragher scored at 3:59 of overtime to give the University of Southern Maine a 2-1 victory over Castleton State in an ECAC East hockey matchup Friday night.
Men’s basketball
Colby 64, Connecticut College 60
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Colby battled back from a nine-point second-half deficit to defeat Connecticut College 64-60. Junior center Drew Cohen netted 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Nick farrell chipped in with 18 points, including five 3-pointers for Colby (7-13).
Charles Stone scored a team-high 19 points for Connecticut College (11-10).
Women’s basketball
Bowdoin 73, Wesleyan 65
BRUNSWICK – Marisa Berne scored 20 points as Bowdoin made a dramatic comeback to extend the nation’s longest home winning streak to 66 games in a 73-65 win over Wesleyan in women’s basketball action Friday.
The Polar Bears (17-2) appeared a bit rusty at the start when Wesleyan jumped out to a 10-2 lead after five minutes of play.
and led by 18 points midway through the second half.
But, Bowdoin would not roll over and play dead. The Polar Bears got back into the contest with strong defense and sharpshooting from the charity stripe, connecting on eight free throws during a five-minute stretch to cut the lead to seven points. A lay-in from Eileen Flaherty, a Wesleyan turnover and a drive to the basket bay Berne cut the edge to three points with two minutes remaining.
The Cardinals (14-6) attempted a desparation 25-footer with seconds remaining, but was fouled. Ali Fourney, who was 4-of-4 from the line, but amazingly missed all three free throw attempts to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Bowdoin took control of a delfated Wesleyan squad by out scoring the visitors 10-2.
