LEWISTON – Lewiston municipal employees participated in Junior Achievement’s Groundhog Job Shadow Day on Feb. 2. Each year, Junior Achievement matches Lewiston with a school, and this year the match was 18 sixth-grade students from Portland’s Lincoln Middle School. They were accompanied by teacher Nancy Chard and parent chaperones.

Groundhog Job Shadow Day is a project of Junior Achievement of Maine, an organization dedicated to educating young people about business, economics and free enterprise. Administrative Director Deborah Taylor and Program Director Christine Ellis attended the event, noting that they’ve been impressed with Lewiston’s annual efforts.

Employees and students gathered in the Lewiston City Council Chambers at 9 a.m. for a welcome by Mayor Lionel C. Guay Jr. and a government overview from City Administrator James Bennett.

The rest of the morning, the students observed the job duties of their respective workplace host, and at noon, a Powerpoint presentation highlighting the morning’s activities was shown to all participants.

“We were once again pleased to participate in Junior Achievement’s Job Shadow Day, and we enjoyed sharing with the students all the great things that are occurring within the city of Lewiston,” said Bennett.

Those employees who served as workplace hosts were Bennett; Human Resources Director Denis Jean; Margaret Chisholm and Megan Bates, director and deputy director, Lewiston Recreation and Parks; Deputy Library Director Karen Jones; Deputy Finance Director Heather Hunter; MIS Director Peter Bassett.

Also, Chief William Welch, Deputy Chief Michael Bussiere, Detective Sgt. Michael Cornelio and Lt. Michael McGonagle all of the Lewiston Police Department; Battalion Chief George Merrill, Lewiston Fire Department; and city Community Relations Coordinator Dottie Perham-Whittier.
