LEWISTON – Jack Louis Winter, 89, died at the Montello Manor on Feb. 6.

He was born in New York City of immigrant parents, Isidore and Lena Safran Weinstein, graduated from Madison High School in Brooklyn, and earned a B.A. degree from Brooklyn College. He later received a certificate in social work from Tulane University and went on to practice social work in New Orleans until World War II.

During the war he served in the Army in San Juan, Puerto Rico, training non-English-speaking troops. At the time of his discharge, he held the rank of first lieutenant. Also during the war he met and married Lucy Frierson Winter, who was his wife for 53 years. She predeceased him in 1998.

After the war, he operated a restaurant in Brooklyn and then served as a stockbroker with the firm of Edwards and Hanley in New York. He was also an active member of the Masons. As a young man, he was an accomplished athlete. He played football in college and later with semiprofessional teams on Long Island.

He taught judo in New York, and was handball champion of the Brooklyn YMCA. He and his wife retired to Maine in 1978. He will be remembered by his family as a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather, and by his friends and acquaintances as a warm and intelligent man with a wonderful sense of humor. His generosity set an example for all who knew him.

He is survived by his daughter, Judith Andrucki, his son-in-law, Martin Andrucki, and his grandson, Max Andrucki, whom he dearly loved; and his sister-in-law, Phyllis Winter.

He was predeceased in 2005 by his younger brother, Seymour; in 1969 by his older brother, George; and in childhood by his brother, Willie, and his sister, Evelyn.
