Public supper

MEXICO – There will be a public supper at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Mexico UCC (Green Church). Menu will be spaghetti served family-style plus homemade pies. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children under age 12.

Quilting topic

PERU – The Peru Extension Homemakers will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Peru School. The topic will be quilting with Elaine Benedict as leader.

Members should bring quarter yard pieces of material, scissors, thread, needles and a piece of sandpaper. Jane Peterson will bring the mystery. Members are to bring a bag lunch.

Friday skiing

RUMFORD – There will be skiing from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at Black Mountain of Maine. There will be kitchen specials in the Last Run Lounge. The Mara Races will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, and the Mountain Vertical Challenge Qualifier will start at 1 p.m.

Evolution Sunday

MEXICO – The Mexico Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 163 Main St., will participate in Evolution Sunday on Feb. 12. The “Green Church,” with the Rev. Virginia Snapp-Cunningham, will offer a special sermon at the 10 a.m. worship service.

Hundreds of Christian churches from all areas of the country and a host of denominations will discuss the compatibility of religion and science on that day.

MEXICO – There will be a Youth Resource Team meeting at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at the Teen Scene.

NEWRY – The selectmen will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at the town office.

Circle session

RUMFORD – St. Timothy Circle, Daughters of Isabella, will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the Parish Center. The refreshment committee will be Adelia Curato, chairwoman; with Pat Arsenault, Dot Chrissikos, Kay Lawler and Theresa Vaillancourt.

Health screening

MEXICO – Generations Health and Fitness, 17 Carlton Ave., will hold a free screening for cholesterol, blood pressure and a heart health risk assessment from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14. A sign-up sheet is available at the desk or call Dan or Karla at 364-4544. It will take 30 minutes and there will be a take-home report. A report can also be sent to the doctor.

Senator to visit

RUMFORD – U.S. Sen Susan Collins announced that a representative from her Lewiston office will be available from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Rumford Town Office, 145 Congress St., to hear constituents voice concerns and to provide assistance with federal issues and agencies, such as Social Security, veterans affairs, citizenship and immigration.

Class luncheon

MEXICO – Stephens High School Class of 1945 will meet for a luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Dick’s Restaurant. Call Connie at 364-8785 for reservations.

Mission statement

RUMFORD – The Rumford United Methodist Church chose a mission statement to help them verbalize their place in the River Valley Community.

It states, “God Loves Us – Pass it On Through Sharing, Nurture, Outreach and Worship.” At the Administrative Council of the church, it was chosen to represent the reason for their actions as Christians. Dot Wing, council chairwoman, and Pastor Kelley Harvell led the group to their decision.
