Farm conference

UNITY – The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association will host its annual Spring Growth Conference on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Common Ground Education Center. The theme will be “Cover Crop Rotation Strategies for Organic Fertility and Weed Management.”

Speakers will include Anne and Eric Nordell of Beech Grove Farm, Beech Grove, Pa.; Eileen Droescher of Ol’ Turtle Farm, Easthampton, Mass.; and Eric Gallandt from the University of Maine Sustainable Agriculture Program.

The Nordells will lead a free workshop/discussion, “Horse-drawn Tillage and Cultivation: Equipment and Techniques,” on Sunday, Feb. 26. Preregistration is requested.

Essay contest

AUGUSTA – Maj. Gen. John W. Libby, commissioner, Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management and adjutant general, Maine National Guard, announces the National Guard’s 2006 Lewis and Clark Youth Rendezvous Essay Contest.

Ten Maine high school juniors and seniors will be selected to earn an all-expenses-paid trip to Bismarck, N.D., from Aug. 13 to 18. These winners will join 530 students from across the United States for educational events and activities.

The essay needs to address the following question: “In your opinion, what military value (loyalty, duty, respect, selfless-service, honor, integrity or personal courage) most describes the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery journey and why?”

The essay can be submitted online or by mail and must be received by midnight Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Call for contestants

PORTLAND – The Maine Junior Miss program is calling for all high school senior girls who are interested to participate. Volunteers and sponsors are needed as well.

The 49th annual America’s Junior Miss National Finals will be held in Mobile, Ala., in June.

Award offered

BANGOR – Nominations are being sought for the seventh annual Dorothea Dix Mental Health Advocacy Award, named in honor of Hampden native Dorothea Dix, who was a pioneer in promoting better conditions for people with mental illness in the 1800s.

Acadia is looking for individuals or groups that have demonstrated a tireless commitment to advocating for individuals with mental illness through education, public policy initiatives, or program development.
