I would like to comment on the condition of Route 4 from Phillips to halfway up the mountain to Rangeley.

There have been many accidents in the past, especially around Smalls Falls. Could it possibly be that end of the road often does not get plowed until 8:40 a.m.? I met the sand truck coming up as I was going down and it’s usually at the bottom of the mountain. Then, instead of plowing, often sand or salt is spread on 4 inches of snow, making it very mushy and hard steering, even when driving a four-wheel-drive.

Many people travel these roads in the early evening. I, for one, go to work at 8 p.m., and the roads need better care. Usually halfway up the mountain seems to be much better cared for, although Feb. 5 there was an accident at the Appalachian Trail due to icy roads. Very scary.

The secondary roads in Phillips and especially Salem are usually excellent.
