LEWISTON – John E. Shaw, 61, of Main Street, Roxbury Pond, died Thursday, Feb. 9, at the Central Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Rochester, N.H., on Jan. 24, 1945, the son of Ruel and Thelma (Shaw) Berry. He attended Mexico High School and Norwich University in Northfield, Vt., where he was in charge of the Mountain Cold Weather Team for the U.S. Army Special Forces.

He retired on Aug. 8, 1982 from the U.S. Army Special Forces with 20 years of service, including two tours in Vietnam as a SFC, Co. B, Second Battalion, Tenth Special Forces Group.

He was married at Fort DeRussey, Hawaii on Sept. 30, 1969, to Jean Vallee, who survives of Roxbury Pond. Other survivors include his mother, Thelma Berry of Dixfield; four nieces and two nephews; three great-nieces and four great-nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Beth Stetson and Cindy Sharkey.

John was very proud of Larry Costa who he thought of as a son and Stephen and Mark Costa as grandsons and was very grateful for the love and support of his best friend, Lauren Hebert, and his wife, Liz.
