PORTLAND (AP) – A $1 million contribution by L.L. Bean board chairman Leon Gorman and his wife Lisa will endow a scholarship fund at the University of Southern Maine.

Starting in the fall of 2007, proceeds of the Gorman Scholars Fund will be earmarked for seven undergraduate scholarships of $5,000 each along with three $3,000 scholarships to graduate students. The scholarships can be renewed up to three times.

Only in-state students will be eligible for the scholarships, which will be awarded on the basis of academic talent and financial need.

“This is a magnificent gift,” said USM President Richard Pattenaude, “one that strongly supports our goal of ensuring academic success for greater numbers of full-time undergraduate and graduate students.”
